Attention Residents of Marathon!
There will be a Candidates’ Night scheduled for Tuesday, October 2 at 7:00 pm in the Council Chambers of Town Hall.
Candidates will face off and review their platforms, answer questions and debate “hot topics”.
Only those in attendance will be given the opportunity to ask questions.
Space is limited, so seating will be on a first come, first serve basis.
This is your opportunity to find out who the best candidate is for you!

There will be Advanced Polls at the Town Office on
Thursday, October 11, 2018 from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m.
and
Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m.
This will be your last opportunity to vote before Election Day on October 22, 2018.

Each election, Municipal Clerk staff prepare a package containing valuable information for those individuals who are thinking about running as a candidate in the municipal and school board elections. Below, you will find a copy of the information package for the 2018 Municipal and School Board Elections and a number of other important communications.
Candidate’s Package
- Nomination Paper – Form 1
- Nominations are open from Tuesday, May 1, 2018 to Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2 p.m. To run for the office of mayor or councillor for the 2018 municipal election, you must file a nomination paper. Until you file a nomination paper, you cannot raise or spend any money on your campaign.

Key Election dates for candidates for the 2018 election.
Key Dates 2018
- First day for candidates to file a nomination paper for the office of mayor, deputy mayor, councillor or school board trustee.
- First day for an individual or entity to file a notice of registration as a third-party advertiser.
- Campaign period begins once a nomination paper or notice of registration is filed.
- Preliminary expense limit and other legislative documentation provided to candidates and third-party advertisers on the day they file.
- Final expense limits provided to candidates and third-party advertisers.
- Campaign period ends for candidates and registered third parties.
- Last day for candidate or registered third parties to file an Extension of campaign period (Form 6).
Key Dates 2019
- Last day for candidate or registered third party to apply to Superior Court of Justice to extend the time to file the financial statement.
- Last day to request a compliance audit on a primary financial statement.
- End of supplementary campaign period.
- By 2 p.m:
- Last day to file financial statement for reporting period ending July 2, 2019 – only applies to those who filed a Form 6 to extend the campaign period.
- Last day for candidate or registered third party to notify Clerk of filing extension received from the Superior Court of Justice.
- After 2 p.m:
- 90-day compliance audit period begins.
- Start of 30-day grace period in which a candidate or registered third party may file the supplementary financial statement and pay a $500 late filing fee.
Third Party Advertisers
- A third party advertisement is an advertisement in any broadcast, print, electronic or other medium that has the purpose of promoting, supporting or opposing a candidate in the election, or a “yes” or “no” answer to a question on the ballot.
- A third party advertiser is any individual, corporation or trade union that causes an election campaign advertisement to appear. A third party advertiser is required to register with the Town Clerk of the municipality where they want to advertise.
To become a third party advertiser in the upcoming election, you must register with the Town Clerk.
- Registration opens beginning May 1 to October 19, 2018.
- Until the Town Clerk certifies your registration, you may not spend money on your campaign, accept contributions or begin advertising.
